Competition Categories
All competition wines are blind-tasted and judged in categories according to varietal or style, not by region, using the same 100-point system as used by Wine Access magazine. The size and variety of categories is dependent on the wines entered in that year of competition. Every year, Wine Access presents a list of the Top 25 Killer Values, based on price and score, from the competition.
Previous varietal categories include:
Best Sauvignon Blanc - Best Chardonnay - Best Riesling - Best Viognier - Best Pinot Grigio/Gris - Best Pinot Noir - Best Merlot - Best Cabernet Sauvignon - Best Syrah/Shiraz
Results may also be grouped into best scoring wines by country but wines are never judged in origin-defined categories.
Varietal categories, the number of winners and the vocabulary of results are subject to change up to the release of the October/November 2010 issue of Wine Access magazine.
