Getting to know the Italian family behind Astoria Wines

Five Minutes with the Polegato Brothers

Astoria Wines was founded in Veneto, Italy in 1987 by Paolo and Giorgio Polegato, brothers whose family has a vine-growing history. Astoria is known for its prosecco, but also produces barrique wines from its 16 hectares of vineyards.

Their award-winning prosecco ($12.95, LCBO) recently underwent a makeover and its new gold foil packaging reflects its reputation as a celebration wine. The posh brand focuses on value and Astoria’s wines can be found across the country.

What do you love about the Veneto region?

“I love my region for its variety of landscape - the sea, mountains, lakes and fantastic cities. With the added value of great food and wine, in the Veneto region you eat better thanks to its large culinary variety,” says Giorgio.

What's your favourite Astoria wine and why?

“At the moment my favourite is the 9.5 Cold Wine Pink, a rosé sparkling cuvée. It is a light, lower-alcohol wine (9.5%) that’s rich in bouquet and has a delicate perlage (bubbles). Currently this wine is enjoying great success with female consumers and it is a fun wine to drink,” says Paolo.

What’s in your cellar?

“Prosecco and Amarone wines from Veneto are two wines that can not be missing from any private cellar,” says Giorgio.

What’s your perfect pairing of food and prosecco?

“I drink Astoria Prosecco DOC all year round. I love to break the traditional rules of wine and food pairings. I drink Astoria Prosecco DOC with pasta, meats and in particular with the traditional food of the Veneto region,” says Paolo.
