A Backyard Spectacle

Tom Firth explains how to sabre champagne or sparkling wine.

The wine industry is full of what could be politely called ‘one-upmanship,’ which aside from the usual “what I drank vs. what you drank,” or with whom, or where, it also includes a number of other measuring sticks. This would include using a butler’s friend or ‘ah-so’ bottle opener, opening a bottle with a shoe and one of my favourites, opening a bottle of champagne or sparkling wine with a sabre.

Rediscover Burgundy

Monday, February 8 I had a fantastic day tasting and talking about one of my favourite wine regions. Burgundy offers tremendous variety from really only 2 grapes, pinot noir and chardonnay. Although they seem to think they may have the exclusive on terroir, perhaps no better place exists to demonstrate this in wine.

This past Monday was a day I had been looking forward to for quite a while. The plan was spending a whole day tasting burgundies. From a 10am seminar/tasting, a walk around tasting from 12 till 5 and an interview with a Burgundian expert at 1, what's not to love?

The whole program was put on by Burgundy Wines (http://www.burgundy-wines.fr/ ) which incidentally is a great source for information about the region and its wine.
