We’ve started a bit of a Friday tradition, here at Wine Access HQ, of doing something fun and wine-related to wrap up the week. This week, we learned how to sabre Champagne/sparkling wine, the fine art of sabrage.
If you’re a wine aficionado, you probably know what sabrage is and you may even know how to do it. For those of you who are new to wine, sabrage is when you use a sabre or knife to cut the top off of a bottle of sparkling wine, separating the collar from the neck of the bottle.

So, we've been blogging, tweeting, Facebooking, and flickring about the International Value Wine Awards. You may been wondering, "Okay, what happens next?"
In short, what happens next is that you will be able to see the results of the competition in the October/November issue of Wine Access. Yes, you have to wait that long, but isn't it suspenseful?

It takes a lot of work to move over 3000 bottles of wine from the offices of Wine Access to MacEwan Hall at the University of Calgary. It takes even more work to get all those wines sorted, ordered, and stickered for our panel to sip and judge.
The Wine Access team, with the help of several dedicated volunteers, met at the University on Sunday morning to set up before the competition. Tom Firth and his team moved all the wines to the venue on Saturday, and they were waiting to be unpacked and sorted on Sunday.

Over the past couple of weeks, we've been pretty busy around the Wine Access office preparing for the International Value Wine Awards.
More than 1000 wines have been entered into the competition, and our judges will be blind tasting these wines to determine the best selections for under $25.

Before you think that all wine professionals do is just cruise around the globe drinking fine wine and eating sumptuous meals you should know that this is only a small part of what really happens. I spent most of the last 2 months going to wine shows and tasting events across Canada. A lot of time spent in airports and a lot of time working in hotel rooms. Wine Access has been at a number of excellent consumer shows this fall starting with the Rocky Mountain Wine and Food Festival in Calgary and just recently ending with the Gourmet Food & Wine Expo in Toronto.
