Best Connoisseur Beers

For the snobs

By Don McSwiney for Avenue Calgary's June edition.

Don McSwiney’s beer drinking resume includes 25 years of enthusiastic consumption, as a private citizen and member of The Dino Martinis. Turn-ons include long walks on the beach, beer, discovering great new beer and talking or writing about beer. Turn-offs include beer snobs and those unwilling to give different beer styles a chance.

1664 Blanc

Kronenbourg Brewery (Carlsberg International A/S), Alsace, France

5.0% Wheat Beer

Light and foamy ambrosia, 1664 Blanc is sweet, smooth and mellow. The yeasty, malty alchemy produces subtle flavours underneath the citrus, like strawberry and vanilla, balanced with orange peel and spices. Sublime.

Where to drink it: On a deck, in a hot air balloon or on the beach — it’s bottled summer.

Pairing: Light patio lunch, grilled white fish and salad.
