Best Knock-’em-Back Beers

Just appreciate these beers for what they are — quaffable.

By Don McSwiney for Avenue Calgary's June edition.

Don McSwiney’s beer drinking resume includes 25 years of enthusiastic consumption, as a private citizen and member of The Dino Martinis. Turn-ons include long walks on the beach, beer, discovering great new beer and talking or writing about beer. Big Rock Brewery, Calgary, Alta.

3.8% Light Lager

Alas, Big Rock’s light is no better than most. Beer-and-club-soda flavour and consistency with a profile that is more sour than bitter.

Where to drink it: When you'd like the taste of a beer without the boozy punch, this might be nice at a family picnic on a lovely summer day.

Pairing: Use as a palate cleanser between a heavier soup, like leek or cream of mushroom, and a main dish.
