Going for a round? You'll want one of these beers

By Don McSwiney for Avenue Calgary's June edition.

Don McSwiney’s beer drinking resume includes 25 years of enthusiastic consumption, as a private citizen and member of The Dino Martinis. Turn-ons include long walks on the beach, beer, discovering great new beer and talking or writing about beer. Turn-offs include beer snobs and those unwilling to give different beer styles a chance.

La Vache Folle

Microbrasserie Charlevoix, Que.

9.0% Milk Stout

Pours thick and black as midnight with a mushroom cloud head. Smoky, malt goodness with overtones of burnt caramel and coffee. The milky sweetness is hemmed in by good hops stitching. Mellow and easy, not boozy.

Where to drink it: Savour while curled up listening to your favourite vinyl on one of those cold February nights Calgary gets in the summer.

Pairing: Best savoured on its own, but might work well with dark chocolate.
