Fruity Beers

If you'd rather drink juice or soda

By Don McSwiney for Avenue Calgary's June edition.

Don McSwiney’s beer drinking resume includes 25 years of enthusiastic consumption, as a private citizen and member of The Dino Martinis. Turn-ons include long walks on the beach, beer, discovering great new beer and talking or writing about beer. Turn-offs include beer snobs and those unwilling to give different beer styles a chance.

Ceres Red Erik

Royal Unibrew, Denmark

6.5% Red Beer

Sweetened with sugar and fruit juice, so the net effect is closer to an alco-pop or a shandy. The taste is quite mellow, with noticeable hops on the finish. The overall effect is pleasant.

Where to drink it: Take a six-pack with you on your next romantic mountain getaway and enjoy a couple as you contemplate the snowy peaks.

Pairing: Drink it as a dessert beer, maybe with a cheese tray or a fondue.
