In This Issue: Bordeaux

The November 8th release shines the spotlight on Bordeaux, a region that stills conjures up visions of ultra premium, classified growths gracing the finest tables of the world. It also conjures up images of elitism, wine auctions commodities and prices that are, sadly, out of reach of most mortals. More than any other region of the world, Bordeaux, at least at the top end, is subject to the vagaries of financial climate and market shifts, being so heavily dependent on secondary wine trading and supply and demand economics. The whole archaic en primeur method of selling continues to mystify consumers, the wine trade and the producers themselves, seeming to satisfy only the négociants (the traders between châteaux and distributors). Once a brilliant device for capitalizing your production and generating cash flow before your wine was even ready to sell, it has become a frustrating system that leads to continuous speculation, huge variations in price from vintage to vintage and even variation in price for the same château in the same vintage, sold at different times and/or markets.

I know that many châteaux would certainly like to have more control over their distribution and pricing. But for many, were they to turn their backs on the "Place de Bordeaux", the prospect of setting up international distribution almost overnight seems expensive and overwhelming. So for now it remains a "can't live with ‘em, can't live without ‘em situation.

On the buyers' side, the original justification for this system was that distributors, and subsequently consumers, could secure quantities of highly sought-after châteaux at prices below what their eventual market value at release would be. In reality this does not always happen - the wines are almost always available somewhere and not necessarily (that much) more expensive. In vintages such as 2005 when the prices reach dizzying heights, even the upfront futures can knock a big chunk out of your bank account. The question is, why tie up your money for nearly a couple of years before you will even receive the wine? There are surely profits to be made, but I wouldn't bet my future on it.

In all this discourse, it is easy to forget that the cult châteaux and cru classés represent less than 5% of the production in this massive region. Thousands of producers toil away each year in relative obscurity, in some cases producing wines better off remaining obscure, in others crafting some very fine wines that offer exceptional value. The secret to finding good deals in Bordeaux, like in other parts of the world, is to seek out over-delivering producers in lesser-known regions. AOCs such as Fronsac, Canon Fronsac, Côtes de Castillon, Bourg, Blaye, Côtes de Francs, Lalande de Pomerol and Montagne St.-Emilion, Moulis and Listrac are some of the names to look for. There isn't an abundance of good value Bordeaux in this release, but there are nonetheless some wines that are worth a detour. The top scoring wines are listed below.

Outside of the feature, the top ten smart buys is populated with fine wines all under $30. Given that there is over $3,200 worth of wine reviewed here, at an average bottle price of $31, the average price of the top ten is a little higher than usual. The majority of recommendations (8 out of 10) though are also 90+ wines and thus still considered smart buys. Some things aren't expensive, they just cost a little more!

Features & Blogspots:
Check my Master's Peace on Wine blog for a review and vertical tasting of the outstanding IL Carbonaione from Poggio Scalette in Tuscany. TORBRECK 2005 THE STEADING**1/2
Barossa Valley, South Australia

A Rhône style blend of Grenache (60%) plus equal parts Mataro (aka Mourvèdre) and Shiraz, this is crafted in a high toned, floral, almost old world style that is showing clear signs of evolution for the better. Dried berry, even port-like flavours characterize the palate, though the wine manages to retain poise and finesse despite the big concentration and generous, ripe flavours/alcohol. Serve this beauty with a selection of hard-aged cheeses on cold wintry nights.

Hardly subtle, this PV has big, oaky, spicy, mint-eucalyptus, black fruit and melted butter aromas, and a massive palate to match. FLAT ROCK CELLARS 2007 RED TWISTED**
VQA Twenty Mile Bench, Niagara Peninsula

Screw cap closure. Like the white version, Twisted Red is an unspecified blend, though given FlatRock's devotion to Pinot Noir you can be sure that makes up a large part of the composition. The wine is closed at the moment, though wood-vanilla notes are evident alongside some red berry fruit and wet earth. The palate is dry and still quite firm and astringent. I would leave this alone until mid-2009 to see how it evolves. Consider the score provisional.

Château du Tertre 1996 Grand Cru Classé*1/2
Bordeaux

Yes, that is correct, 1996, an unusual inclusion in this line-up of mostly 2nd millennium + Bordeaux (also begs the question of the usefulness of a tasting note from 2001 in the Vintages catalogue). The nose is quite fabulous, fully evolved and highly fragrant, but the pleasure begins and ends there. After enjoying complex floral, earthy, dried red and black berry aromas, the palate fails to wow in like fashion. It shows moderate intensity, still lightly dusty tannins and a touch of funk on the finish. Still intriguing, but it is priced beyond the range of casual explorers.

CHÂTEAU DE BEAUCASTEL 2007 COUDOULET DE BEAUCASTEL BLANC AC Côtes du Rhône**
Rhône Valley

A fine, ripe southern Rhône white from just outside the Beaucastel estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape (hence the Côtes-du-Rhône designation), led by Marsanne and Viognier with a smattering of other local white varieties. Moderate+ intensity aromatics offer ripe, dry and even slightly candied stone fruit aromas (nectarine, peach) verging on tropical fruit. Subtle oak adds an extra dimension. On the palate it's fullish, dry, round and creamy-textured, with high flavour intensity and a big mouth filling impression. Fresh, really intense and attractive aromas in a ripe, modern expression. Fresh basil and lemon custard notes and balanced by well-integrated wood. Dry, medium bodied, with above average concentration and palpable texture and extract, leading into a long finish. The wood dominates the palate for the moment, but this should evolve nicely and offer pleasure between 2009-2012 with intensely flavoured food.
