Top Canadian Cabernet Sauvignons

The best cabernet sauvignons at the Wine Access 2011 Canadian Wine Awards

(33 entries, 20 medals)

The number of entries and medals handed out was almost identical to last year, and there are some repeat appearances in the top medals. Painted Rock moves up, however, with its 2008 taking gold (bronze last year), followed by silver for its 2009. Nk’Mip holds steady with two silvers, after taking gold last year. Not surprisingly, B.C. dominates the cabernet sauvignon medals, given its hotter growing season, especially considering the cool vintages in Ontario in 2008 and 2009. Canada can make great cabernet sauvignon, but it requires the greatest of viticultural skill, aligned with good vintage conditions. It’s not a slam-dunk.

Painted Rock 2008 Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon
90Points

A stand-out wine in its flight. Notes of tar, spice, currant, leather, tobacco, cedar, smokiness and underbrush on the nose. The palate is massive, with big tannins and tight fruits that are surprisingly well-balanced. Cellar for 3 to 5 years or enjoy now with flavourful beef or game dishes. This wine won a gold medal at the Wine Access 2011 Canadian Wine Awards.
