Top Canadian Viogniers

The best viogniers at the Wine Access 2011 Canadian Wine Awards

(15 entries, 10 medals)

This exotic white grape — which originates in Mediterranean France — continues to intrigue winemakers and consumers alike, this year garnering enough entries to be considered a significant category, and scoring a healthy medal ratio, too. The gold-medal Pentâge 2009 Viognier from B.C. is awesome, everything a viognier fan wants, with some of the finesse found in top examples from Condrieu. B.C.’s Okanagan Valley, with its more Mediterranean climate, dominated with nine out of 10 medals. Ontario’s lone medal went to an opulent example from Creekside that has shown well in Ontario competitions, too.

Medium gold in colour, with intense jasmine, peach and orange blossom aromas. The palate is dry, with the lush texture of Viognier and intense and concentrated flavours of jasmine, apricot and spice that last on the long finish. This wine won a gold medal at the Wine Access 2011 Canadian Wine Awards.
