The team at Sterling has made a great statement about their merlot-producing skills, taking consecutive winners at the IVWAs. The winemaking team pioneered this variety in California, with talented winemakers including Ric Forman (I remember trying Sterling’s first vintage — 1969 — with him) and subsequently Bill Dyer. It is interesting to see that although the more expensive $25 Napa Valley 2008 won last year, this time the amazing value $15 Central Coast 2009 prevailed. It doesn't have as heavy tannins, with less length than wine made from Napa fruit, but it is still impressive, easy-drinking and concentrated, with prominent oak. The nose is the best part, with very expressive aromas and lots of attractive, supple, ripe, blackberry and herbal fruits. What value!
