Good syrah/shiraz comes in different styles and this year saw both the moderate climate juicy, peppery, meaty style and the big, ripe blockbuster wines. The category champion this year came from the latter style. The Michael David from the warm Lodi climate was all about ripeness. The nose combined intense plum and brambly mixed berry fruit with toasty oak aromas such as vanilla, chocolate and coffee. The palate was not timid either, full and lush in body, with just enough acid and tannin to provide structure and lots of very ripe black fruit and vanillin oak that lingered on the finish.
