Ironically, for the first time, a French wine has topped this category. This staple chardonnay from historic négociant-éleveur Louis Latour has delighted judges in previous competitions and perhaps it is the marvelous 2010 vintage that has conferred extra depth of structure and riveting acidity. Look for a fragrant, citrusy nose, tangy lemon curd flavours and a dusty, mineral finish. Succulent and balanced, with full malolactic fermentation; stainless steel fermentation has kept the wine trim and fresh. Pork with grilled peaches or salmon with dill sauce are fine food matches, but it is so complete, it can stand proudly on its own.
