Eat, Drink and Be Merry

Seeking the perfect wine and food pairing is always an elusive exercise, but when you get it right, each is a celebration of the other. Alas, like most consumers, I rarely put much thought into pairing what I would describe as good wine with takeout.

In fact, unless I am scanning, ravenous, through various menus, or the thought of cooking after a long day sends me heading for pick-up on the way home, I rarely think about takeout at all. And yet, I grew up in a home where family dinners, more often that not, left a trail of aluminum foil and Styrofoam containers strewn across the counters. Some of my favourite meals have been takeout shared in a magnificent spread on the dining room table — won ton soup, platters of shawarma, moussaka, barbecue ribs.

At Wine Access, we know the magic of wine pairing is revealed when the right wine and the right food turn an ordinary meal into a dining event. The food doesn’t have to be fancy, and it certainly doesn’t have to be scratch-home-cooked. Just the time spent thinking about presentation and pairing makes us slow down and appreciate the experience. We don’t have to treat takeout like fast food — we should take in the flavours, enjoy the food, enjoy the wine and appreciate our dining companions.

This issue is a celebration of food and wine, either when dining at home or when benefitting from the thoughtfulness and presentation of sommeliers and chefs when eating out. Each meal is an opportunity for pleasure, so go; eat and enjoy.
