Fitbit Inspire 2 review: The little fitness tracker that gets me

It feels like a tracker worthy of a better screen too. Those numbers are still short of the two weeks you can get from a Xiaomi Mi Band 5, but it's a tracker that can live up to the lofty battery claim with the full gamut of its features in regular use. It's done the same on the Charge 4 and more recently on its Versa and Sense watches. If you want the basics in a slim design, it's still going to have appeal, but if you own an Inspire HR, it doesn't feel like an upgrade you desperately need to make. The Fitbit Inspire 2 was announced in late August 2020 and started shipping in late September 2020. That's because, in large part, they share a similar design language, and fans of the tracker should appreciate that continuity because it means that this device can use the same bands as the previous generation something that hasn't been a strong suit for Fitbit in the past. Sometimes I'd have to squeeze multiple times to get the input to register, while other times, I inadvertently set it off based on the watch's position up against my wrist or hand. After using the Inspire 2 for over a week now, I've gotten past those frustrations and have found myself settling into a rhythm with the new device. Cancel before free trial ends to avoid subscription fees• You can get Inspire 2 in three colors; black, lunar white and desert rose. I've been using this input method on my Charge 3 for nearly two years and have had few issues there. My biggest source of frustration with the Inspire 2 was the band attachment mechanism. Including a one year free subscription to is very cool of Fitbit, especially for a relatively low-priced item in its lineup. The Fitbit Inspire 2 is exactly what I needed! You can also swipe up to see individual daily stats, which does include some data you can only manually enter on the Fitbit app — things like water intake and food tracking. Perhaps these inconsistencies compared to my Charge 3 can be explained by the sensors' position and the casing material; the Charge 3 has an aluminum casing, and the sensor is only on one side, whereas the Inspire 2 has a plastic casing with touchpoints on either side. Fitbit has added some heart rate based features it's rolled out on other devices, like its Active Zone Minutes and Workout Intensity Maps. They will also appreciate the advanced metrics and data that they'll be able to access thanks to a free year of Fitbit Premium. Yes All Day Calorie Burn Better understand the total number of calories you burn—all day and during workouts—to manage your weight and stay on track toward your goals. Starting during the setup process, you're presented with an offer to purchase SquareTrade device coverage. Free trial must be activated within 60 days of device activation. It claims you can get 10 days, which is five more days than the Inspire HR and three more days than the Charge 4. When it's time to break from smashing step goals, the Inspire 2 will track your sleep too, letting you see sleep breakdown including REM sleep and giving a sleep score, while you can also set silent alarms to gently wake you in the morning. However, I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Inspire 2 sees a significant discount during Amazon's upcoming sales event. It just needs a gentle tap or squeeze and it's nice and responsive. Yes Complete Sleep Tracking See your time spent in light, deep and REM sleep stages and get sleep insights to help you improve. An entry-level fitness tracker with all-day heart rate monitoring• It's hard not to think about the kinds of displays on Xiaomi or Huawei's trackers and feel like Fitbit should be giving us something a bit more impressive in this department. It does not have onboard GPS, though you can connect to the GPS on your phone, nor does it offer any wrist-based media controls like the , Versa 3, or. Yes Onscreen Workout Coach Get personalized on-screen workouts that play on your wrist, coach you through each move and adapt based on your feedback. Fitbit Inspire 2: Sports tracking and heart rate accuracy When you want to switch the focus from steps and sleep to workouts, the Inspire 2 does have an exercise mode that should make it more useful in that scenario. You—wearing the new Fitbit Inspire 2 with a free one-year Fitbit Premium trial for new Premium users. This is a tool that helps you follow the public health recommendations for exercise, which state that not only should you aim to spend a certain amount of time exercising each week, or hit a particular number of steps, you should also try to achieve goals in specific heart rate zones. With the Inspire 2 you're getting the ability to submerge it in water up to 50 meters deep, making it suitable for showering and going for a swim. And with the new Health Metrics dashboard coming soon to the Fitbit app, you can track your trends and changes to your breathing rate, heart rate variability, and resting heart rate —important information that can help you manage your well-being. Works with phone nearby; Spotify Premium subscription required. We've found that its exercise tracking abilities are a mixed bag and it's not somewhere this tracker really excels. It's available in three colors at launch: Lunar White, Desert Rose and Black. You have limited vision The display shows more than I expected, but it's still pretty small. Fitbit has been notorious for its constantly-changing, proprietary charging cradles, and the one for the Inspire 2 falls right into this pattern. When he's not writing about smart home gadgets and wearables, he's defending his relationship with his smart voice assistants to his family. If you believe you are experiencing a medical emergency, call emergency services. You have plenty of to mix up the look too and that's no doubt going to give it more appeal than other trackers. The screen also has to be unlocked, which means you don't have real-time stats on view. I don't think this was intentional; rather, it seemed like a UI bug because when I tapped where it should have been and the offer went away. So can Fitbit still justify costing more than the competition for its entry level fitness tracker? Do you really need your watch tell you your phone is ringing? Additional Fitbit Inspire 2 health metrics from Fitbit Premium subscription It will also unlock more features in the new mindfulness section of the app, where you can listen to sessions to get to grips with the basics of meditation. Yes Workout Intensity Map After outdoor exercise, check your workout intensity map in the Fitbit app to see your heart rate zones throughout your route. Yes Battery Life 10 days Fast Charging No Pros. Yes Active Zone Minutes Feel a buzz when you reach your target heart rate zones during exercise and celebrate when you earn extra minutes outside of workouts. If you have any concerns about your health, please talk to a healthcare provider. True, the screen is much smaller than even that on the Charge 3 and 4 trackers, but Fitbit did a good job with the text size and brightness so that I had no trouble seeing what was on the screen — pretty impressive for these degrading eyes. Run tracking compared without GPS: Fitbit Inspire 2 left and Garmin Forerunner 945 right When we did manage to get a connection, it didn't really get much better. The size and weight are so slight that I can go for hours without even noticing the device on my wrist, and when I do, the soft silicone band feels very comfortable against my skin. Out of the box, it's set to a dim mode, which you can turn off in the settings on the band. The display is black and white, and the Inspire 2's case is made from plastic to keep the price and weight low. Sleep monitoring• You're getting the same band and tracker combination that's available with black, white or rose color bands. I know this is a smaller and lower-priced tracker than the Charge 4, but I was a little disappointed to see no workout presets on the watch or in the app for walking or hiking. Although I wear test smartwatches regularly, I prefer the lighter feel and more minimalistic approach of a traditional fitness tracker, and the Inspire 2 doesn't disappoint here. This information is for educational purposes only and is not intended as a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. The tracking experience on the band lets you tap on the bottom of the main watch screen to scroll through your daily stats. This is the kind of feature you'd want to buy the Inspire 2 for. Something you don't seem to have access to is the guided programs and more personalised insights that seem to be reserved for more feature-rich Fitbit trackers and watches. To view notifications, you'll need to swipe to the notifications menu where you'll find them stocked up. Most notable among them is a slightly more streamlined design of the Inspire 2 and the absence of any physical buttons. You can view notifications from Android phones and iPhones. We had the standard, more sport-friendly band, which was comfortable to wear. Plus improvements in looks, screen brightness, a much longer battery life and a link to my phone GPS for improved tracking of my long walks. Optical heart rate monitor• Band, buttons, charging cradle Fitbit Inspire 2: What I don't like I've gushed quite a bit about the Inspire 2, but the experience isn't all roses either. Run tracking compared with GPS: Fitbit Inspire 2 left and centre and Garmin Forerunner 945 right In the pool, it's more of the same as far as the experience of checking your real-time data is concerned. You can follow him on Twitter at. About the only thing I miss from my old Fitbits is tracking elevation floors climbed. Yes Resting Heart Rate Wear your tracker or smartwatch all day and night to record your resting heart rate and track heart rate over time. If you have poor eyesight, you will want to get something with a larger watch face. After championing the Charge series and now spending some time with the Inspire 2, I think I can safely say that if you're going to get a fitness band, it's going to be really hard to pass up the Inspire 2. It's now letting you press or squeeze the sides of the tracker's case to do things like wake up the display, skip back a screen or open up the settings. Track all-day activity: your steps, distance, hourly activity and calories burned• Ultimately though, these features thrive on reliable heart rate monitor data, which is something we didn't really experience here. Inspires compared: Fitbit Inspire 2 top and Fitbit Inspire HR bottom So far the move by Fitbit to ditch physical buttons has been done with varying degrees of success. This feature is not intended to diagnose or treat any medical condition and should not be relied on for any medical purposes. The is a nice alternative band that features a color AMOLED touchscreen and most of the same health and fitness tracking features as the Inspire 2, but it comes in at half the price. Premium content and features subject to change. The big change on the design front here is that Fitbit has decided to ditch the physical button that was present on the first Inspire. Late September, though it's available to pre-order now• You need long battery life If you're like me, you absolutely hate taking off your watch to charge it regularly, or you just forget to. That can be a daunting prospect if you're new to exercise, so the Fitbit app simplifies it and gives you easily attainable goals and awards for meeting your targets. Yes, you can find cheaper fitness trackers, but few offer such a well-designed app, robust community, or in-depth tracking and metrics as Fitbit does. If and when it does, we'll be sure to update this review accordingly. It is intended to provide information that can help you manage your well-being. Yes, it's light and comfortable to wear, but the size of the device and the quality of the display don't really make it the best suited for things like running or swimming as far as giving you real-time data you can easily absorb on the move is concerned. Also consider: Most of your interactions though lie with the touchscreen display, which doesn't look all that different from the one included on the first Inspire. Reserve your new favorite Fitbit device today! 95 in black, desert rose, and lunar white are comfortable, swim ready and stain resistant—making them the perfect accessory for everything from a swim at the pool to a walk in the park. HR comparison for high intensity: Fitbit Inspire 2 left and Garmin HRM chest strap right We had some massive heart rate spikes and higher average readings against a chest strap monitor for most runs, high intensity interval workouts and steady paced indoor rowing sessions we put it up to the test against. For comparison, the newly announced Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa 3 both offer battery life of around six days. There are also around 20 different clock faces to choose from. As you'll probably see from our pictures though, it does have a annoying habit of picking up a lot of fluff. Extra bands are available from the Fitbit store, including silicone, leather, metal and woven designs. You may not elect to use all of the features included in Fitbit Premium, but there is a little something there for everyone, from enhanced health metrics and tracking to guided workouts and meditation activities. You also have connected GPS support, which means you can use your phone's GPS signal to more accurately track outdoor activities. Varies with use and other factors• Based on our experience, the extras you get with the Inspire don't feel big enough to warrant paying up. Manage Notifications Inspire 2 will alert you when you receive notifications from both third-party and native apps on your phone which you can manage via the Fitbit app. Up to 1 0 days' battery life Put the Inspire 2 alongside the Inspire HR and the two look very similar. I found the touchscreen much more fluid and responsive than the one on my Charge 3. NFC is nice to have, but it makes sense why it didn't fit in such a small device. Speaking of the band, the Inspire 2 is available in three different colors, including Black, Lunar White, and Desert Rose. Yes Guided Breathing Session Find moments of calm throughout your day with personalized breathing sessions based on your heart rate. Read on to learn how Inspire 2 fits in perfectly with your lifestyle. It's an evolution rather than a revolution, offering a slightly refreshed design and a handful of new features to make it easier for newcomers to start developing healthier habits. It works fine and feels well optimised to that display. The other major player in the fitness tracking space is Garmin, and its line of Vivosmart and Vivofit trackers both on their fourth generation could be good alternatives to the Inspire 2. And of course, squeezing the sides of the watch takes you back a screen repeat as necessary. The Inspire 2 can track over 20 exercise modes thanks to Fitbit's SmarTrack technology that automatically recognizes continuous movement over 15 minutes and does a pretty accurate job of categorizing it in the Fitbit App. It would be lovely if Fitbit could standardize the charging experience moving forward. The available exercise modes that you can actually select include running, biking, swimming, treadmill, weights, and interval workouts. Just like its predecessor, its fitness-focused and features a whole lot of fitness tracking features with a long battery life of up to 10 days. The problem is that the competition is getting better at the extras the Inspire offers, such as sports tracking and smartwatch features. From your current app account, add a device and make sure it synchs to your new Inspire 2 so all of the data stored in your old Fitbit ports into you new device. Again, Fitbit Premium will help you get more from this data by allowing you to track trends over time. 95 Fitbit Inspire 2 release date and price Fitbit announced the Inspire 2 at a virtual press event on August 24, and the device became available to pre-order on August 25. That's not to say you can't get some sports watch-like features here as well though if that's something you want to track. Yes Connect With Wireless Headphones Listen to your favorite tunes without the wires. Fitbit Inspire 2: Smartwatch features Away from health and fitness tracking, Fitbit does manage to squeeze in some extras too. It's a that largely sticks to the same formula, adding a handful of new features. I just let the battery run out on my old Fitbit and will soon delete it from my account. And no, the cradle for the Inspire HR doesn't work on it either. Last Updated on September 7, 2020 by Fitbit Inspire 2 which was announced alongside and Sense is the successor to Inspire that was released last year and is set to start shipping late in September. Apart from being a very unobtrusive tracker to wear to bed, it offers a nice breakdown of that time in bed and recognising when we've gone to bed and woken up in the morning. No Connect and Control Music on Spotify Control your music, songs, and browse recent playlists and podcasts all from your wrist. Bear in mind, however, that there's no SPO2 sensor to track changes in blood oxygen saturation. We are disappointed to see that an altimeter misses the cut once again, which means you still can't track elevation like stairs climbed during your day. Perhaps it felt it was more important to maintain compatibility with the previous generation Inspire and Inspire HR bands, or it wanted to keep redesign costs down, or both. There are other insights available like sleep heart rate and restlessness during the night, though you'll need to subscribe to Fitbit Premium to see it. The one area that I thought I would be complaining about here was the display, but I came away really enjoying it. Also, for me, the Not Now button was hidden and it took me a few seconds to figure out how to dismiss the offer. This isn't even taking into consideration the hundreds of third-party options. At first glance, it looks relatively simple; you just line up the pogo pins and snap it in. Screen complaints aside, it's a still a fitness tracker that's light and slimmer to wear all-day and to bed compared to other trackers. 95 in black, transform your Inspire 2 from stylish wristband to understated accessory with a subtle clip, then embrace whatever the day has in store. There's a decent mix of watch faces here too, and you'll have to make your choice in the app as there's no way to store more than one watch face at a time on the Inspire 2. Below is one such run where it failed to capture the mapping and both distance and pace data captured was wildly off. The sensor array hasn't changed in as far as what you can track. No Make Payments Use your credit and debit cards to make secure purchases anywhere that accepts tap-and-pay. Fitbit Inspire 2: Health tracking While you won't get the kind of innovative health tracking features you'll find on Fitbit's new Sense watch, you do have the ability to keep closer tabs on aspects like your mental health as well as access some richer health metrics. While the responsiveness for swiping on the screen was fantastic, I had mixed results with the side panels' squeeze gesture and haptic feedback. Navigating the display is mostly an enjoyable experience as well. Fitbit says the Inspire 2 offers impressive battery life of up to 10 days — the best of any Fitbit device to date. Fitbit Inspire 2: Fitness tracking The main reason for owning the Inspire 2 is that you're most interested in keeping tabs on things like step counts, sleep quality and maybe having some heart rate metrics to look over too. Our issues with the Inspire and Inspire HR were with outdoor visibility, and Fitbit has added the ability to brighten up the display to improve things. For running, we had issues getting the connected GPS support to work. Swim tracking up to 50 meters deep• Resting heart rate data from Fitbit Inspire 2 Fitbit also includes menstrual health tracking features, which live off the tracker and inside the Fitbit companion phone app. You'll need to be conservative with sports tracking and switching off that dim screen mode to do it. The band also includes female health-tracking, and it is water-resistant up to 50 meters. You can also get a better mix of hardware and sports tracking for significantly less from Xiaomi and Amazfit, which is worth keeping in mind. No Real-Time Using Phone GPS See your real-time pace and distance by connecting to your phone's GPS, then get a map of your route in the Fitbit app. From an accuracy point of view, we wore it alongside a Garmin fitness tracker and found step counts and distance were within 500-600 steps of the Garmin. If you like the idea of a functional Fitbit band and don't mind a slightly wider, thicker watch, then you might want to check out the. Track your time in light, deep and REM sleep, then get a Sleep Score to better understand your sleep quality each night• Overall, my Inspire 2 has a nice collection of easy to use features and none of the random noise that has bothered others. The breakdown of where those steps occurred during the day was consistent too. Just remember to set a reminder to in your Google Play or iOS Appstore account if you don't want it to automatically renew a year from now! It seems to me that at least one of those walking would be a very common use case for the target audience here. However, the Inspire 2 does appear to track and record walks in the app's exercise tab automatically, so perhaps that's why that particular workout was left off the band itself. It's due to ship in late September, but Fitbit hasn't given an exact date. Enjoy 10 days of battery life for daily progress without constant charging. No Sleep Mode Use the sleep mode to mute smartphone notifications and stop your screen from turning on at night. But either Fitbit fixed that issue or that feature is broken on mine because the only time mine buzzes is when I receive a notification. You like to swap bands frequently I know that I just said that the Inspire 2 is great for those who love to accessorize, but this could also be a pain point for those same people; at least, it was for me. I still don't fully understand why Fitbit can't make it a simple snap-on band like the new Versa 3, Sense, and Charge 3 and 4 devices. So what do you get as an Inspire owner? 95 in Bloom features a delightful print, because getting fit is more fun when you dress the part. Without taking advantage of the free Premium offer, all the data presentation I enjoyed with the older Charge 2 HR is included in Inspire 2. However, I did have some inconsistencies with it on my Inspire 2 review unit. The tracker has slightly slimmed down, but not in a really noticeable way when it's on. You can reorganize the order from the app, but you can't choose any other manual modes like you can on Fitbit's more expensive trackers. Get a better understanding of your fitness level and see how you can improve over time with a personalized Cardio Fitness Score. How much does it cost? Interestingly, there's a high intensity interval training profile that creates a workout where you train for thirty seconds and rest for ten seconds. Step tracking compared: Fitbit Inspire 2 left and Garmin fitness tracker right What is slightly annoying is that you have to go to different screens in the app to see things like distance covered and calorie burn. Always check with your doctor before changing your diet, altering your sleep habits, taking supplements, or starting a new fitness routine. There's a 3-axis accelerometer to track indoor and outdoor activity, and an optical heart rate monitor for continuously monitoring heart rate and letting you work out in heart rate zones.
