This wine has pleasing spice notes, dried cherry and an earthy, rooty character on the nose. A 2007, it is mature, but showing well, with good complexity and balance of youth and maturity. It should be stunning with some braised ribs or hearty, beef stew.
A sangiovese and cabernet dominated blend, with the addition of 20% syrah, this vintage is still showing very, very well. This wine has intense cherry and raspberry notes, with vanilla, milk chocolate, tea, spice and old tobacco. It is finely structured in the mouth, with almost juicy red fruit, spice, meaty tannins and a long cocoa powder finish. Drink now or over the next two to five years.
One of the premiere producers of sparkling wine in the States, this traditional method sparkling wine is showing well from the solid 2007 vintage. There are brioche, mineral, lemon, baked apple, pear and honey aromas. With lots of toast and lees character, this wine is showing some maturity, but it still has good fruit notes and a mild woodiness on the finish. A great wine for fans of aging Champagne, who also don't want to break the bank. I really like it, but feel it is developing quickly.
It’s been some time since we tasted a Beringer PR cab this good. Obviously, 2007 was kind to Napa. The normal-ish, but dry, growing season helped to reduce berry size and give this wine the extra oomph that makes it special. Dense, dark and delicious, it has all the bells and whistles; this is Napa (Howell Mountain) opulence at its best. The six percent cabernet franc seems to add just the right spice and texture. Terrific wine. $100 - $159
Deep inky purple in colour, the Graham’s LBV brings intense raisin, plum jam, cherry pie and toffee aromas. Chewy and full-bodied, it is almost like fruitcake in a glass — plenty sweet, with loads of raisin and dark fruit and a hint of spice. Unlike fruitcake, however, this wine provides a pleasantly warm, long finish. A great way to finish a holiday meal. Some markets may already have the excellent 2007 vintage.
A blend based around grenache, this wine also has additions of 15% syrah and 10% mourvedre. The nose is strangely juicy, with jammy and floral fruits, smoke, mild raisin tones, tobacco, tar and spice box. Slightly closed at tasting, the initial perception was the wine was sullen and tannic. It opens up, but perhaps 2012 isn't the time to drink this bottle. I'd suggest cellaring it for two more years to see if the underlying depth of this wine can emerge.
Sour cherry, prune, tar, leather, strawberry jam aromas and hints of vanilla oak are found on the nose of this wine. The palate is full and dry, with grippy tannins. Judges enjoyed the meaty, earthy and spicy notes, but noted this is definitely a wine that's best served with food. Try mushroom risotto or braised beef dishes.
This private reserve label is a more traditional style of tannat. It's not afraid to be a little more rustic and have heavier tannis. The nose shows lots of anise, resin, black fruit, raisin and smoke. In the mouth, there's plenty of concentration, with firm tannins and a mild juiciness to the raisin character. A lengthy and pleasing earthy finish round out this bottle of wine. Drink now, after decanting for sediment. Enjoy with anything from grilled meats to rich stews.
This wine has an intense and aromatic nose, with honey, lemon, nectarine and soapstone notes. The palate has complimentary flavours to the nose, with bright, balancing acid, citric fruit and a clean finish. A very tasty wine!
