Johannehof Reinisch 2009 Pinot Noir

Quite a find, this Austrian pinot noir is dark red in colour, with forward cherry and earthy notes on the nose. It is clean tasting, with big fruit, good body, balanced acidity and a fresh, lingering finish. A steal at this price and a great way to explore pinot noir around the world.

Vintage: 2009

Price Range: $5-$15

Schlumberger NV Brut

Lemon and lime tones show over apple, melon and rock candy aromas on the nose. The palate has fairly coarse bubbles, tight, tart citrus notes and a little toast and mineral. It's a solid wine for seafood, sushi or oysters.

Vintage: NV

Price Range: $15-$25

Forstreiter 2009 Zvy-Gelt Zweigelt

Lifted white pepper, black cherry notes are found on the nose of this wine, with hints of leather and tar. It is slightly closed at first on the palate, but eventually the lovely milk chocolate and tar characters take over. This has a lengthy, expressive finish.

Smart Grasshopper 2011 Grüner Veltliner

Grüner Veltliner, the darling of Austria, has been growing in popularity. So much so that the variety is being planted in new regions. This one is from Hungary and presents great value. The nose has aromas of lemon, herb and honeydew melon. The palate is dry, crisp and fresh, with more citrus, dried herb, peach and a medium length finish.

Vintage: 2011

Price Range: $5-$15

Bründlemayer 2010 Grüner Veltliner Kamptaler Terrassen

This is a classically styled, succulent, zesty grüner from a reliable producer. Expect the typical citrus, green apple, green herb, white pepper and wet chalk minerality. This is light and has a relatively tight frame and lingering finish.

Vintage: 2010

Price Range: $15-$25

Rosemount 2011 Pinot Grigio

This Austraian pinot grigio is very pale in colour, with light mineral and pear notes on the nose. The palate is lean, with lemon notes and a simple, crisp finish. This would be a good match for spicy garlic shrimp on the barbecue.

Vintage: 2011

Price Range: $5-$15

90 Points

Rabl 2009 Käferberg Grüner Veltliner

A solid grüner veltliner-style nose that is slightly restrained initially, with leafy, pepper spice, melon rind and petrol notes. The palate is a mineral powerhouse, with lime, apple core and great development in the mouth. Serve chilled, with a variety of seafood or poultry dishes.

Vintage: 2009

Price Range: $25-$40

Malat 2009 Höhlgraben Grüner Veltliner

Pepper spice, with grass, lime, mineral and slightly sweet, candy-like aromas on the nose. True and flavourful on the palate, with lime, rock candy, mint leaf, granite and pepper flavours. Fresh, clean and an excellent quaffing grüner veltliner. Perfect with seafood, poultry or turkey and the fixings. Serve chilled.

Vintage: 2009

Price Range: $25-$40

Graf Hardegg 2009 Veltlinsky Grüner Veltliner

A great little grüner for all occasions and biodynamic as well. Pepper, lime, and apple fruits on the nose slightly subdued while on the palate, slightly off dry with good varietal character. Tasty, if simple, serve chilled.

Vintage: 2009

Price Range: $15-$25

Grooner 2009 Grüner Veltliner

Light spice, melon, red apple skin, flint and pear bring intense aromatics on the nose of the Grooner. Lemon, red apple and spice flavours are intense on the zippy, light-bodied palate — while it's a crisp, lean white, there's a light, toasted nut component on the finish.

Vintage: 2009

Price Range: $15-$25
