While most Aussie cabernets we see in Canada tend to be from Margaret River to the west, or Coonawarra to the east, it’s the Barossa lying between them that steps up and sings proud. Textbook cabernet flavours are quite ripe and very juicy in this version; currant, cassis, grilled bell pepper and whatnot— but the 80-year-old vines extend good character and more layers underneath that showy surface.
This shiraz, grenache and mourvèdre blend is dark purple in colour, with rich, meaty aromas and almost raisined blackberry and currant fruit. Full-bodied, round, warm, boozy (at 14.5% alcohol) and juicy, this has firm tannins that can stand up to meat dishes, like beef fondue.
I have a soft spot for the wines from Nugan Estate. They tend to be good, consistent and well-priced. The sauvignon blanc has a nose of ripe melon, mineral, gooseberry, almond, apple and olive notes. Soft and juicy on the palate, it is a welcome departure from New Zealand sauvignon blanc. Delicious stuff.
Convince people that Australian shiraz is not all over-the-top jam juice with this wine. The nose is ripe and rich, but balanced with blackberry, chocolate, cassis and savoury pepper notes. The palate is full, with medium acidity, firm but ripe tannins and flavours of black plum, paprika, blackberry, subtle smoke and eucalyptus notes.
A blend of fruit from Eden Valley and Adelaide Hills, this wine has wet stone, perfume, French oak and floral aromas, with a bit of a reductive quality to it. Medium in body, with a pleasant mix of fruit and oak on palate, this is a very good wine. There is great balance, crisp acidity, yet it is rich — a new kind of premium cool-climate chardonnay. Try it alongside halibut with a squeeze of lemon that's been cooked in oil fondue.
Slightly reddish hued in colour, this wine has aromas of orange toffee, spice, raisin pie, dry leather and chocolate. It is sweet and ripe on the palate, with raisin, toffee and caramel characters leading into a slightly nutty finish. Good stuff.
An old vine, single vineyard shiraz, some of the vines date back to the 1920s. The nose is rich and chocolatey, with spice, vanilla, cherry and strawberry notes. There's cinnamon spice on the palate, with chocolate and coffee flavours and a little sweetness to the fruit character. It is perhaps a little weedy on the finish, but in all, this is a big and beautiful Aussie shiraz.
This wine is inky black in colour, with cassis, olive, cherry, sweat, leather, asphalt and menthol notes on the nose. The tannins are tight but balanced by generous black fruit and a lengthy, earthy finish. This is surprisingly elegant, big, well-balanced and well-priced. Drinking well from now through 2020.
This is always a classic foray into the Australian GSM (a blend of grenache, shiraz and mourvèdre). Aromas include sweat, leather, mint, smoke, spice, tar, cherry, cola, ginger and earth. It is big and spicy, with great Aussie style fruit in the mouth. It is balanced, with a creamy chocolate finish. Great stuff!
The nose of this wine has juicy, jammy strawberry and cherry notes, leaning towards kirsch aromas. Chocolate chip, cedar chip and olive also come out on the nose. The flavours are consistent and slightly predictable based on the nose. I loved the minty, menthol notes on the finish.
