This ertified sustainable chenin blanc just leaps out of the glass, with bright aromas. Honey, lanolin, lime and a mild wool sweater character dominate on the nose. The palate is consistent, with a slightly creamy texture and bright fruit notes. An easy, yet solid wine from start to finish. Drink now.
Too many people get stuck in ruts, drinking the same grape over and over, when there are so many enigmatic whites out there. This year, I pledge to venture around white wine world. This has a honeyed richness on the nose and palate, with delcious citrus and tropical notes. It is very full in the mouth, with tropical and spicy complexity. It seems oaked, although this could just be from extensive lees aging.
This pinotage has aromas of oak, black fruit, grape and cherry. Some judges found it a bit closed on the nose, but think it might open up given time. The palate is where this wine really shined, with savoury, meaty and fruity notes all playing together. Supple leather, spice, coffee, smoke and blackberry tones guide the weighty palate.
To add weigth, this chenin blanc had significant lees contact and stirring during the winemaking process. It is certainly distinctive, with smoky notes and a round, almost fatty character. It could use a little more finesse, however.
This wine was produced from a 28-year-old vineyard and picked relatively early for freshness. Vinified and aged in stainless steel, this crisp chenin still shows the characteristic roundness of this grape variety, along with hints of lanolin and beeswax.
Here's another good example of well-priced South African Chenin Blanc. Expect a medium intensity nose, with nectarine, peach, earth and some savoury character. The palate is off-dry, with a medium body, medium acidity and a soft texture. Look for flavours of apple, mineral, peach and a touch of grapefruit pith, with a crisp, lemony finish.
This is distinctively South African, with mild rubbery, smoky aromas, but still showing good spice, bright cherry and raspberry. The palate shows quite a bit of smoke that overshadows some of the fruit and spice complexity that one hopes for. Overall, it is a decent red for barbecued or smoked meats or game. Drink now or soon for best enjoyment.
Lavish spiced vanilla and sweet oak-meets-honeyed peach scents with overtones of lemon verbena. A round, creamy palate of tropical and stone fruit flavours is refreshed by chenin’s riveting acidity for a lingering, citrus finish. Try with creamy mac and cheese made with aged cheddar, or smoked chicken pizza.
Grassy and herbal right out of the gate, this certified sustainable wine shows floral aromas, with citric and capsicum notes. Great acids and a respectable amount of melon and citrus fruits create nice expression right through the finish. Perfect for outdoor entertaining. Drink now.
A straightforward and somewhat dull Sauvignon for the price. A few vegetal and lemon-lime notes and flavours are joined by good acidity. Dry with a bit of smokiness on the finish though the fruit makes a quick escape.
