A sangiovese and cabernet dominated blend, with the addition of 20% syrah, this vintage is still showing very, very well. This wine has intense cherry and raspberry notes, with vanilla, milk chocolate, tea, spice and old tobacco. It is finely structured in the mouth, with almost juicy red fruit, spice, meaty tannins and a long cocoa powder finish. Drink now or over the next two to five years.
From the value line of Charles Smith’s Columbia Valley wines in Washington, comes this kick-ass riesling. The nose is a refreshing mix of citrus, crisp apple and mineral. On the palate it has a nice tug of sweet and tart lime and grapefruit, with cleansing acidity and wet-stone minerality.
This well-established winery from the Columbia Valley in Washington state has always delivered quality wine at a great price. This chardonnay follows that path, with Granny Smith apple, citrus, butterscotch cream and vanilla notes on the nose. It is soft and lush on the palate, with apple, lemon rind and pear joined by vanilla toast and creamy caramel notes.
This was a standout in its flight because of some great aromas of graphite, cassis, vanilla and eucalyptus. The full flavoured wine is rife with menthol, cassis, softer vanilla tones and some big oak. It is perhaps a little overeager, rather than subtle, but an all round good cabernet sauvignon for a good price. Drink now.
A blend of merlot, syrah, cabernet sauvignon and even a little mourvèdre, this wine's nose is soft and juicy, with red fruit, mocha, spice and a mild resinous woody character. Soft, chocolatey flavours and smooth tannins are brought up by some vibrant acid and mild jammy red fruit. This wine is perfect for burgers or sipping with some cheese.
Jammed into this Washington white blend are riesling, pinot gris, gewürztraminer, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc and viognier -— a mélange indeed. Pear, red apple, chalk, honey and melon aromas are most prominent on the nose, with an underlying sweaty edge. Light-bodied and slightly off-dry, ripe red apple is prominent on the palate, with toasted nut, pear, honey and melon flavours supporting. There's good acidity here as well. Keep well chilled for best enjoyment.
This has pleasant aromas of cedar, herb, bell pepper, spice, leather, cherry, cassis, smoke and licorice. The palate is a little lean, with lots of spice, slightly hard tannins and a smooth chocolate finish. Let it settle down for at least two years or decant and enjoy now with a nice cut of beef.
Soft, baked apple, floral and pear notes are enjoyable on the nose of this wine. The palate is medium-sweet, with just enough acidity for balance, fairly simple apple, pear, lime and blossom notes and a medium-length finish.
With its eye-catching label and price, the House Wine label has experienced great success. The white is a chardonnay-based blend, with riesling, muscat, gewürztraminer and pinot gris. The result is a fresh and tasty wine, with aromas of apple, pear, lemon, spice and floral notes. Mineral notes lead into a consistent palate, with sweet fruits and a spectrum of summery flavours. Drink up.
Bruised peach, lemon rind and mineral aromas are complicated by a latex/petrol/beach ball aroma that lurks. It's just a shade off-dry, but the stone fruit flavours are somewhat hollow and one-dimensional. This wine needs some spice and/or acidity to elevate it to something more than just an average, off-dry Pacific riesling.
