Here's a very tasty wine made from organically grown grapes that I could drink all evening without tiring. It shows a mature, savoury, open and fragrant nose, with an intriguing range of aromas, from fruit to black licorice to dried flowers to herbs and spice. In other words, this has excellent complexity for the money. The palate is balanced, juicy, lively and fresh, full of savoury character, with a lingering finish.
This is an ideal white wine for when you want something that's a bit richer, but not over the top. It has the freshness, fruit and minerality of sauvignon blanc, but the judicious use of oak makes the wine weightier, giving it a smooth middle palate and length. This would pair nicely with chicken skewers.
A touch of sémillon and viognier are blended into this wine that sees a touch of oak aging. The nose displays pear, apple and citrus aromas, with just a kiss of honey and spice. It shows weight and complexity on the palate, with pear, fig and toasted vanilla flavours. There’s just a shot of citrus zest on the finish of this lovely, bold sauvignon blanc.
Some wine lovers adore the soft plushness that California can so often provide. This is a well-made, rich, lush wine, with intense oak, chocolate, lots of ripe berry, cassis and cherry jam. The palate is full and soft, but with enough structured tannins to age for 10 years. The flavours mirror the nose with black fruit and oak. Silky, smooth and delicious.
You need only to look at the deep ruby colour on this pinot noir to know it is dense. Sure enough, big, ripe, black cherry, spice, mocha and raspberry aromas are wrapped in rich vanilla tones thanks to the time this wine spent in oak. It is a medium-bodied, rich pinot noir, offering intense, almost sweet, cherry flavours as well as raspberry jam, nutmeg, toffee and mocha notes. It is drinking well now, but has the depth to go for a few years in the cellar. It would pair nicely with roast pork served with mushroom wild rice.
This pinot noir has an inviting nose of warm baking spice, cherry-raspberry pie, leather, cigar-box cedar, sandalwood and savoury notes. It is quite enjoyable on the palate, with youthful red fruit, integrated spice and a creamy-silky feel through the finish. A comfort wine, embrace the warmth.
This wine is classy, silky and biodynamic. The nose is lush and intense, with chocolate, vanilla, ripe plum, black cherry, cassis, violet, coffee and sun-warmed mixed-berry aromas. The palate is full, yet with crisp acidity and ripe, soft tannins. There is lots of black fruit, but it is ripe, not jammy. It all comes together on a long, plush finish.
Here's an organic zinfandel that's nose shows white pepper, brambly jammy fruit, floral tones and a hint of cured leather. In the mouth, it is consistent, but a little leaner in style with flavours leaning toward spice rather than fruit. It is good, but hard to hold up against riper fleshier styles of the grape variety coming from California.
Parducci's Sustainable Red is a ready-to-enjoy blend of syrah, zinfandel, carignan, petite sirah, cabernet sauvignon and viognier. Curiously funky, yet sweet fruit flavours evoke southern Italy more than California. There appears to be some brett here (bringing manure- or chicken coop-type smells), though this adds some interest to the range of flavours. The palate is pliable, but not soft. This is highly drinkable for the money.
This wine has a nose of plum, cherry and mint, with lovely chocolate and spice. It is a fruit-forward cabernet on the palate, with raspberry, cherry, blackberry, licorice, spice, cocoa and vanilla notes and ripe tannins. Another well-priced wine from California.
