The nose of this wine shows lovely blackcurrant, cassis, cocoa-mocha, eucalyptus, herb and oak spice notes. It is youthful on the palate, but still displays intense layers of ripe black fruit, dusty tannins, mint and spice through a long, smooth finish. There is also a fair amount of acid in this refined Napa cab. Hold for a few years for best enjoyment.
It’s been some time since we tasted a Beringer PR cab this good. Obviously, 2007 was kind to Napa. The normal-ish, but dry, growing season helped to reduce berry size and give this wine the extra oomph that makes it special. Dense, dark and delicious, it has all the bells and whistles; this is Napa (Howell Mountain) opulence at its best. The six percent cabernet franc seems to add just the right spice and texture. Terrific wine. $100 - $159
This is an ideal white wine for when you want something that's a bit richer, but not over the top. It has the freshness, fruit and minerality of sauvignon blanc, but the judicious use of oak makes the wine weightier, giving it a smooth middle palate and length. This would pair nicely with chicken skewers.
This chardonnay has a pleasant nose that is slightly buttery, but mainly shows freshness, with citrus fruit and tropical hints. Medium-bodied, with tasty citrus, pear and tropical flavours, it is not cloying at all. There is oak and a touch of richness, but it is nice to find an oaked chardonnay that never tires the palate. Enjoy with pan-seared halibut. Keeps coming back for: being an everyday chardonnay
This is a pleasant, widely appealing Napa merlot, with very ripe, plummy, blackberry aromas and discreet vanilla tones. The palate offers a rich, warm, mouth-filling impression (with 14.4% alcohol), which heats up further on the finish. Forward and bold overall; serve with braised meat.
The '09 Montelena chardonnay is for fans of aristocratic wines. This is a classy, concentrated, restrained, but powerful chardonnay, with terrific persistence and flavour intensity. The finish lingers for minutes. The oak is beautifully integrated and the acidity and alcohol are in fine harmony. Drink now or hold till the end of the decade.
The 2008 Opus is still obviously very youthful and oak-driven on the nose. However, the palate is firm, zesty and balanced, with excellent concentration without excessive extraction. The fruit notes are fresh and ripe, the tannins are balanced and structured and the finish is impressively long. An unquestionably good wine here, though the value notion is another question altogether.
Some savoury notes and big spice show on the nose of this wine, with cassis, cola and vanilla tones. The palate is balanced, but with slightly green tannins. Coffee bean and spice complement the red fruit flavours.
Blended with about 12% petite sirah, this zin has classic aromas on the nose. There are aromas of brambly raspberry and blueberry, bright spice, jam, chocolate and raisin. Weighing in with 15% alcohol, this wine is hot and a little on the sweet side, but lush, clean fruit notes come through on a bright, but relatively short finish. If you like your zinfandel big and jammy, this will fit the bill.
This is a good little chardonnay for everyday drinking from California. The nose shows green apple, pear, citrus, vanilla and spice. It is spicy in the mouth, with a range of pear and citrus notes and good vibrancy through the finish.
