Niagara-on-the-Lake is not yet an official appellation, but we should see it within a few years. This is very fine, elegant chardonnay now approaching prime. Creamy sweet aromas of shortbread, fresh mint, butterscotch and wood spice mingle with the pear fruit. Very supple, creamy texture. A bit low in acidity perhaps, with just a hint of dilution. Very spicy finish.
This is barrel fermented free run chardonnay from various vineyards in the NOL area. The colour is fairly deep yellow gold, the nose fairly big and nutty with honeyed fruit and peat smoke scents. Quite big, creamy, warm palate is actually low in acidity. Good length, but wanted more after the big textural experience. Some bitterness on the finish. Drink over the next 12 to 18 months.
Earthy aromas, with smoke, barnyard, cherry, wood, chocolate and coffee notes are found on the nose of this cabernet franc. In the mouth, there's plenty of spice with chocolatey tannins and ripe fruit. This is an excellent bottle for barbecue, stews or burgers.
This is great value for an organic red from Niagara. It is a cabernet-merlot blend, with cherry and plum fruit, spicy and herbal tones and hints of cassis jam. It is medium- to full-bodied with good balance and soft tannins. Good to very good length. It will be at its best from 2012 to 2015.
This shows the best of what Niagara has to offer in riesling, with a flinty initial nose that reminded judges of some Mosel producers. Look for signature lime and floral notes, great body, gripping acidity and excellent length. A lovely wine — it would pair well with summer salads, smoked salmon, lime-stuffed roast chicken, grilled rich fish or barbecued pork.
This lightweight, fruity pinot noir has some solid structure and good length. Expect aromas of red cherry and cranberry, with nicely integrated spice tones and some raspberry jam hints. The palate is simple, clean and well balanced. A good match with mushroom risotto.
This gamay noir has a peppery nose, backed up with some red cherry-berry fruit. The palate is light, with a dry, savoury aspect complementing the fruit. There's enough structure here to go with a diverse number of foods. Sometimes the best wines are the basic ones that showcase terroir and grape varietal character.
