Red apple skin, melon, anise, mineral and pear aromas are front and centre on this obscure grape that is sometimes used in eastern Europe and is a secondary white grape in Burgundy. This medium-bodied white manages to deliver some of the purest red apple flavours I've ever tasted in a wine, fleshing them out with ripe cantaloupe, modest peach and mineral notes. The acidity is kept low, allowing the fresh ripe fruit to really shine through.
This is essential Niagara riesling. Thirty Bench has found the perfect formula for Beamsville Bench expression of riesling. Every vintage displays loads of wet stone minerality on the nose, complemented by lemon-lime aromas and flavours. The mouth waters when drinking this wine and each sip delivers pure sweet fruit. The requisite acidity is there, too. Keeps coming back for: that Beamsville Bench limestone nose.
This unfiltered wine is apple-gold coloured in the glass, with lemon drop, apple and pear flesh and mineral notes, with touch of dusty chalk. It is balanced and pleasant, with a fairly light touch on the oak and a long, creamy finish.
Creekside has excelled with syrah for several years, based largely on its Paragon vineyard in the warmer St. Davids Bench region. This is quite impressive for a 2008. It has a big, rollicking, spiced nose of sour plum, blackcurrant, huge black pepper, capers, oyster shell and wood smoke. In all, it is very engaging. It is mid-weight, smooth and ready to drink. Quite well focused and its interesting flavours hit excellent length. It is moving into prime time for consumption, with another three to five years ahead.
The St. David's Bench brings a hint of spice and a light, salty brininess to the classic red apple, peach, flint and vanilla aromas — and it works. Medium-bodied and crisp, this chardonnay shows a great balance of ripe apple, stone fruit and smart acidity. This wine won a bronze medal at the Wine Access 2011 Canadian Wine Awards.
